Apoptosis is the natural cell death that occurs during normal growth and maintenance of the body. There is a continual turnover of cells which helps the body get rid of old unwanted cells and stops the growth of tumours. Cells die if they are given the appropriate signal or if they don't get the right signal to stay alive.
